Ah’m Tar’d

Urges Don’t know why so tired.  Can’t remember doing all that much.  Too hot to go to grocery today.

Did finish the summer sausage.  Cooking it that is.  Almost forgot about it.  Really good though.  Eating slice now.  Best I’ve made so far.  Might make more later.  Depends on mood.

Found out Fire Marshall will be visiting next week.  Oops.  Haven’t set off alarm for over a month, but guess too many times now.  Place is cluttered now, so will get large storage crates and have Mike take out to farm.  Should be safe in barn for week or two.  Good chance to put shelves back in order.

Ethan 16Ethan, couple y ears ago.  Now living in dorm at University of Kentucky.  GO CATS!!!  different perspective Oh, wrong kind of cat.  Cute though.  Gina as freshmanGina, oops, Regina, Ethan’s mom.  She went to UK also.  Ain’t she sweet, see her walkin’ down the street.  Sorry, she makes me want to sing.  Great mom.  Two Master’s degrees.  Hubby has Ph.D.  When they graduated together, she said she would call him doctor as long as he called her Master.  That’s my girl.empty nest Even with three still at home, prob’ly feelin’ empty nest syndrome.  Or maybe some relief that someone else has to feed Ethan now.  Bottomless pit appetite there.  Same with other two boys. Anika eats like a bird.

Think I remember putting soap in refrigerator.  Don’t ask.  Be right back.  Should take it out now.  BAck now.  Twelve perfect lookin’ bars.  Bars of soap, that is.  Prob’ly twelve perfect liquor bars somewhere in town too.  Wouldn’t know.  Don’t hang out there.  Least not any more.

Getting another box of produce tomorrow.  Not sure what I’m hoping for.  Have million recipes want to try, but can’t make them all at once.  Maybe make mini casseroles ‘n freeze ’em.  Have to grate a lot of cheese tonight or tomorrow.  And make more breadcrumbs.  Running out.  Did make two cups butter.  Used to make that growing up, but now don’t get the cream like we had then.  This time bought cream and forgot why, so ended up putting in freezer bag and rolling between hands til it turned to cream and buttermilk.  Shucky dern.  Was going to make buttermilk biscuits.  Forgot all about them.  Make them tonight and have with real butter and fruit syrup or apple butter.  Home made, of course.

versatile-blogger-awardSee this?  My thanks to Jess, at Therapy Bread for nominating my blog for this award.  Pretty, isn’t it.  Just nominated, not won — yet. Would be nice to win.  But really surprised to be nominated.  Think she puts ten pounds on me every day when I read her blog.  Then print out her recipes.  Especially the cherry chocolate ice cream.  Sooooo goooood.  THAT’S why I bought so much cream.  Just kinda overbought.  Gee, thanks Jess.  Did get some good butter out of excess cream though.

barbeque grill Not long til Mount St. Joseph picnic.  Think they have better barbecue pits than this, but don’t care that much for BBQ.  Just want the burgoo.  Will keep mom company while rest of family go to picnic.  Sent them some ruffled scarves for picnic.  My Alma Mater.  Burgoo there matches St. Martin’s.  Same family recipe.  Can’t wait to see family who can get here.  Larry can’t come.  Has to have surgery on eye.  Needs prayers.  But will find some member of family to pick up burgoo for me.  Want freezer filled with it this winter.  Some days all I can swallow.  One of bad things about MS, but fun when food flys out all over table.  Oops, now no one will let me eat with them.

Out and About

This morning I decided to take life in wheels and go to the grocery.  Just needed a few things, but as usual, they grew as I cruzed the aisles.  My list had been written.  It was still at home next to my favorite chair.  Right where I left it.  That’s the way it always works.  I did remember most of the stuff on it.  MOST of the stuff.  And naturally had to take the power chair before Mike transforms it.

Decided Mike and I should open an art gallery.  While he’s welding the chair, he could weld parts of old cars to it.  Maybe find some other junk to put in there.  You never know what could be lying around out there.  And I can take some canvas and open a few of the old paint cans.  Splash the paint on the canvas.  A lot of color.  The more you can’t understand it the more people read into it.  We could be famous.  Or we could be idiots.  Think my money would be on idiots.

Baby oil Ordered some soap making supplies today.  Sometimes use olive oil in the soap.  Might try baby oil this time.  Naaah.  Coconut oil is best.  Castor oil good for skin.  How many of you remember that from childhood?  The internal ingestion was, shall we say, explosive?  Really hated OJ for years after that.

Remembered to get my paper supplies today. grocery listThey were on my list.  I know, because I looked at it when I got home.  Then after a long rest, went to K-Mart for computer supplies.  And liners for crock pot.  And wouldn’t you know they were all on the top shelf?  If I could have walked they would have been on the bottom shelf.  Knees hurt, so hard to stoop down.  Easy to reach down when in the chair.  Impossible to reach top shelf when my reacher was on floor behind where my chair had been charging.  Funny how you don’t notice these things before leaving home.

Even funnier when you get to checkout and discover purse was also left at home.  They know me by name over there now.  Go home, get purse, go back, pay for purchase, start back home.  That’s when you notice chair is running on very low battery.  Pray, pray, pray even harder.  Get back to apartment building and everyone you know is sitting outside.  They all want to talk, so turn off chair.  At least enough people to push me home if chair won’t start again.

Mike Janette Noah Ah, leaving you with something pretty to look at.  My soon to be pard Mike, Noah and Janette somewhere up a creek on vacation.  I’m on a permanent vacation.  That’s what happens when you’re retired.  Like sleeping late when I want to.  Hate having insomnia that keeps me awake all night.  Much rather be out and about.

A Visit From The Fire Department

I didn’t get any pictures of them, but I did manage to burn my dinner tonight.  It was edible, and really delicious, fried fish and fried green tomatoes.  And before you worry about all the fried food, I used coconut oil, which is really good for people.

I also used high heat, and didn’t have the fan turned on high, so before I knew it my apartment was filling up with smoke.  The alarm didn’t go off at first, and I reset the fan to high in hopes that it would keep the alarm from going off.  I even sat down and started eating, when suddenly the shrill alarm started, then shut down in just a few seconds.  Hoping that was fast enough that it didn’t attract any attention at the Fire Department, I just continued my meal, enjoying every tangy bite of the tomato.   My hopes were shattered though, when there was a knock at the door.  Two firemen stood there and asked if I was okay.

I was anxious to get back to my fish and tomatoes, so I told them everything was fine, but they said the apartment had a lot of smoke in it.  Shucks!  I was hoping I just needed to clean my glasses.  They came in and looked at the skillet on the stove, where the remnants of the batter was cooling down, and the fan was still on high, then asked me if I wanted them to open the windows for me.  Sure, anything, as long as they left so I could get back to my quickly cooling dinner.  Fish and fried green tomatoes lack something when they get cold, and I sure didn’t want to have to stick that skillet back on the burner and set off the alarm again.

They opened the windows, and glory be, a wonderfully cool breeze blew in and the smoke dissipated quickly.  My glasses weren’t as dirty as I thought they were.

Just as I got back to my plate, the phone rang.  The building monitor checking to see if I was okay.  The firemen were probably already downstairs by then and she could have asked them, so I could have started stuffing my face again, but what the heck.  I managed to eat it all before it got cold, and I have another tomato for tomorrow night.  I have more fish to fry too, but I think I may oven fry them this time.  Hopefully no smoke that way.

Actually I’m surprised I didn’t set the alarm off earlier today.  I canned some watermelon pickles.  The water in the water bath pan I used was boiling over and the entire apartment was heating up, but I not only got 3 pints of pickles, but I also canned the leftover pickling solution, so if I decide I like the pickles I’ll reuse the leftover solution and make another batch before the summer is over.  I’ve always heard of them, but have never tasted them, so after I let them set for a couple of weeks to absorb all the flavors I’ll open a jar and take a bite or two.  If they live up to my hopes I’ll make more, if not I’ll find someone who likes them and give them away, and use the leftover solution in a relish.

I did take pictures of the pickles, from start to finish, but forgot to put the card back in my camera, so they are on the camera itself.  I know I have a cable somewhere that will hook the camera up to the computer, but I have a drawer full of cables that belong to a lot of different things, so it will take me some time to find it.  If I ever do, and if I make more pickles, I’ll use those pictures for a blog on the new pickles.

And just to show what a great day this started out to be, I went to the grocery this morning to pick up a few things, and got a bag of flour that I didn’t notice was split until I stuck it in the basket in my lap.  I looked down and my jeans were covered in white flour, as was my power chair, the little basket, and everything around me.  So, a well-floured morning and a visit from the Fire Department to end the day.  What more could a girl want?
