And It’s Getting Even Colder

But before we get to that, the good news.  Next week I start therapy on my shoulder!  I’m doing a happy dance in my brain, since my legs still don’t work all that well, and yes, I know it will hurt, but that will be a good kind of hurt.  I’ll be back in the kitchen, cooking again in two months.  My personal resolution.  Maybe a bit premature, but I’ll do it!!!!

family-268 These are my two great grandsons, Eli and Camden.  And they are standing out in the snow, the only photo I have in my library that has snow in it.  We have some snow in the forecast, but I received an email from my Citizens Emergency Relief Team (CERT) trainer today that we are going to have a horrible, humongous cold wave starting next week, with the temps dipping below zero.  So if you are in the Owensboro, KY area, be prepared.  Dress in layers, have emergency equipment on hand, both at home and in your car if you have to get out.  If you don’t have to get out, Please STAY AT HOME, and bundle up.  Have an ample supply of finger foods on hand in case of power outage, don’t turn your heat up too high so you can conserve electricity, dress in layers, and please take care of your pets.  They get cold too.  There is no word about ice or snow, just the extreme cold, and I know a lot of you live in colder areas, but darn it, this is supposed to be the South.  Upper south, but still….

Now for the personal train wrecks.  Believe me, as long as I’m breathing, there will be train wrecks.  I got this really nice cushion for my power chair, since my bum is getting a bit sore from sitting all the time, and today managed to spill my Dr. Pepper on it.  And on my phone, which was on the cushion next to the Dr. Pepper.  A new twist on sticky keys I think.  So, to keep from getting the seat of my jeans wet (I hope) I have a thick towel covering the cushion.  Also, a large wet spot on the leg of my jeans.  If there’s a way to destroy it, I’ll find it.

I’ve managed to drag a second quilt off my bed by getting it caught in my chair.  This takes a special talent.  And yesterday I pulled a panel off the door of the elevator.  Well, I never claimed to be a good driver.  And besides, the door shouldn’t have tried to close on me so fast.  It got me to my floor though, and for the first time in months it didn’t make that horrible sound when the door opened.  Guess I showed it who’s boss, huh?

Happy (?) New Year

Here’s hoping this year will be so much better than last one.  At least the last month of last one.  I really want to get back in my kitchen and cook something.  I know I can’t smell anything, but still I can remember the smells of the things I usually cook, and really miss that pot of beans and the Mexican cornbread that always go with it.  Mmmm, what more can a person ask for than beans and cornbread on a cold, winter day?

I have a new award, sorta.  Since a picture is worth a thousand words, here it is. doncharisma-org-not-on-freshly-pressed-award-4-300x300 doncharisma-org-not-on-freshly-pressed-award-3-300x300I haven’t decided which one to put in my gallery yet, but I think it will be the one with the picture of the presenter, Don Charisma.  Of course, the other one shows up better, but I’ll decide before my next post.  Don is really a great guy, currently living in Thailand, who is now doing great things with stitching photos together to make up really large, breathtaking scenery.  He’s funny, intelligent, and altogether a great guy who created my angel logo for me.  My knight in mostly shining armor.  You really should check out his blog,  At least I think that’s it.  If not, so sorry Don.  Sinus headache, remember?

Since I can’t go shopping at this time, I have started online shopping at Amazon.  I think I went a bit overboard on a few things there, but since you don’t actually see the product, just a description, you don’t know until it arrives. 004 Just a few days ago I got a call from the office telling me I had a large package downstairs.  Large?  It was about the size of a coffin.  It is still taking up half my living room.  As you can see, I ordered paper towels, also 007 well, that’s more like a photo of the box with the towels at the top.  So, here’s another one.005 A dozen packages of paper plates, and a huge bag of paper bowls.  Since I can’t wash dishes at the moment, I use a lot of paper products.  And last, 006 a dozen boxes of Kleenex, although I only pulled one out because I only needed one opened at the time.  Fortunately there was no shipping fee, since the order was more than $50.  The trash bags and Windex are still to come, and naturally they are the items I needed the most.  Except for the Kleenex, since I somehow caught a head cold without ever leaving the building.  How?  Your guess is as good as mine.  I think if there is half of an allergen floating around the hemisphere it makes it to my nose and takes up residence there.

I’ve pretty much slept thru the past few days.  It’s just too comfortable under the covers to move lately, and I have a lot of lost sleep to make up.  Throw a couple of pain pills a day into the mix, and I’m snoring like, well, a lumberjack?  Or maybe more like Max did.  For such a tiny dog he could beat my dad when it came to snoring.

Well, back to the sinus meds.  Doctor appointment on Friday for results of CAT scan.  To tell the truth, I’m not sure I really want to know.


More Train Wrecks

Or maybe I should say more headaches.  I’ve been trying to add a drawing Anika made for me of Max, my Pekingese dog.  Cowgirl Anika Anika is extremely talented in so many ways, and can draw everything except cats.  She loves cats more than any other animal, but for some reason, can’t seem to draw them yet, so when she was here helping me decorate the pine cones I asked her if she would draw me a picture of Max.  She drew it, sent it to me, and I have been trying to get it on the blog since I received it.

First I scanned it in to my photos, but it didn’t show up when I was downloading some photos to my blog library.  Then I took a photo of the drawing, and have just spent an hour trying to put that in the library, but when it downloads I get a message that says “crunching”, and my only guess is that by crunching it really means munching, because it sure doesn’t show up in the photo library.  So, I’m going to make one more effort here.  Hold on to your hats and garters, because if this doesn’t work out there could be a huge explosion.  BOOOOOOOOMMMMMM.  It still didn’t work.  What does it mean when it crunches your photo?  I’ve downloaded a lot of photos to this site and they have always been okay.  This is the first time they have ever been crunched.  I wonder if they have seen my trash cans and realize how full they are and how much they need to be emptied and the contents crunched?  Yeeks!  I hope not.  That would mean it could also see the items I have dropped and been unable to pick up.

Well, the title warned you this is about more train wrecks.

Like, I’m having to go on scavenger hunts again, since Irene came in last weekend.  All of the things I use were stored within reach on my right side so I could just pick them up easily when needed.  Some of them were moved to the left, meaning heaps of pain if I have to get them.  Some were placed under heavy objects I can’t lift without chance of dropping on my foot.  Just the thought of that makes me wince.  There are a few things I haven’t found yet, but have made it without them so far.  Others are in places I can see but have no way of getting to, because they are just out of reach.

I went online and ordered a lot of stuff I’m running out of, and the deliveries should start on Monday.  And I also signed up for the produce deliveries from Cecil Farms again, starting in May.  This time I signed up for every other week though.  Getting the weekly deliveries last summer was nice, but there was no breathing space in between.  I think this year I’ll need the time to breathe a week between the deliveries.  I also signed up for fresh eggs during the summer, because I’m never sure when the egg lady will show up here, and I sure love those farm fresh eggs.  Plus, I’ll hopefully be getting some fresh pork this year as well.  That will be from a different source, but will be so much better than the pork bought at the grocery.  And at some point before summer I plan on buying a pressure canner, so I can put some of that pork in jars and can it for later.  That was something my mom always did, and it was sooooo good and so tender you just wouldn’t believe it.  I did it on the farm, and it is great to be able to grab a jar of canned pork loin in an emergency situation and just sit back and enjoy it.  Heat if you want, but it really isn’t necessary.  Just open and enjoy.

Now I’m making myself hungry for some fresh collards and bacon or pork loin.  Fresh anything right now would be good.  I wanna get back to the kitchen.  That means I had better get back in there now and heat up a bowl of burgoo.BBQ capitol of the world


A Whole New Night

100_2564 I held my camera today, and took a few pics of my “decorations”.  I don’t remember where I got this little manger scene, but it stays on the entertainment center year round.  I saw a really pretty, larger one in the gift shop at the hospital today when I went for my CAT scan, and came very close to getting it, but in the end my sanity returned, and I remembered my limited storage space.  So this little one will stay put as long as I do.  And it is surrounded by some of the pine cones Anika and I decorated.

100_2563 100_2565 More of my little mini Christmas trees, with photos and other items behind them, because they were supposed to be used to decorate a tree, not an entertainment center.  Therefore, I didn’t remove any of the other things that were on top of the “mantle”.  When Harriet came to do my laundry for me, I let her choose one as a Christmas gift, since it is now plain to me that I won’t be going out, and the things I ordered online were not ordered in time to arrive by Christmas this year.  Next year is taken care of though.  Boy, howdy, how’s that for early shopping?

100_2567 I decided to take a few photos of my crops while I was at it.  This is the mint plant that Laurie pulled up for me and stuck in a pot last September or October.  I moved it over to the stove, under the light, when the chilly winds started blowing last month.  I think it could use a larger pot now, but that can wait another month or so if necessary.

100_2569 The sweet potato I stuck in a jar has started putting out leaves and has what seems like millions of roots down in the jar of water.  I would like to pot that also, but the potato has swollen so much I can’t get it out of the jar, unless, of course, I break the jar.  That won’t happen — I hope, because as usual I’m still barefoot.  Don’t even have a sock on my right foot because of swollen toe.  Don’t know why it’s swollen, but it’s red and it hurts, and my feet are usually dead, so something is going on there that I probably don’t really want to know about.  I just wonder how tall those leaves will grow.  That brown stuff behind there is a loaf of sourdough bread I got out of the freezer to go with my burgoo.  Tastes just as fresh as the day it was baked.

100_2568 Now my aloe plant that definitely needs a larger pot.  It was so tiny when I got it, and most plants commit suicide on the way home when I buy them so they won’t die a slow, painful death at my hands after we get home.  My luck seems to have changed in that area.  I haven’t murdered a single plant all year.  If it holds until summer I’m going to try raising some container tomatoes, peppers and garlic.  Maybe even onions.  And potatoes?  That will require some thought between now and then.  Wonder about a watermelon?  When I got tired of eating them last summer I pureed some and froze them into cubes for flavored water.  That will be a great way to treat my extra cucumbers and other veggies next summer.  Not all of them, of course.  Can’t imagine squash or okra flavored water, but lemon, lime, orange, cuke, the list is endless.

100_2570 100_2571 Took a couple of pics of my afghan in progress while I was at it.  I wish I had decided on the purple as the only contrast color, and left out the sage and blue, but since it is just to keep me warm I can live with it.  And I started this one 100_2572 when the first one became too heavy to work on.  This is called a corner to corner afghan, and will have a peacock solid between the patterned rows.  To make it easier to work with I’m using up one skein of each at a time.  Finished a row of it today, only have about 10,000 rows to go.  Maybe exaggerating a little bit there, but from the tiny baby scarf bit I have finished right now, it sure seems that way.

Starting to get numb now.  No news from the doc, but then, I didn’t realize my phone was unplugged until just about an hour ago, so I guess I’ll find out on Monday.


Trying Again

all you really need Love all the chocolate the boys keep bringing me.  Mike came by today to do some banking for me, and of course the bank called to verify he was for real.   Oh, what a temptation to put in front of me after all the grief that kid gives me at times.  I was nice though, and he not only got the check cashed, but put the money on my card for me.  And a few minutes ago I got a call from him asking if I was missing anything.  Hadn’t thought much about it until he asked, but then realized he kinda forgot to bring me the change.

I’m using both hands for typing tonight, sorta.  Have to stop and rest the left one occasionally, but it sure makes things go faster.  Instead of a snails pace now, I can move at a turtle’s pace.  I think that can be called progress.  sure am getting tired of sitting though.

Elaine making burgoo This seems to be the only burgoo picture I still have in the media library, and that’s my sis Elaine making about 10 gallons of it last summer.  The point though, is that Mike got some of mine out of the freezer for me today, then got some paper bowls out of the cabinet, so now all I have to do is get a neighbor to come in and heat it up for me so it doesn’t end up in my lap or on the floor before it gets to my mouth.  I never thought I could get tired of chocolate, but when it becomes the only thing on the menu for over a week you start wanting something a bit more substantial.  Same goes with bananas and p-nut butter.  Still want some every day, but do need the extra benefits of a good hot bowl of burgoo.  For the unitiated, burgoo is a very thick — well, not soup, but also not stew.  Made with loving attention by grinding two different meats, cabbage, potatoes, onions, and adding corn and tomatoes plus just the right seasonings — can’t be beat. It’s mostly a regional dish, and the “correct” recipe was passed down from my Aunt Betty Ann’s family, then my sisters took it with them when they moved to Colorado.  Only a couple of places here still make the original recipe though, so I got about 8 gallons last summer and froze most of it for the year.  So glad I didn’t hog it all down at once now that I really need it.

100_2560 Also have some potato soup in the freezer, so when I’ve eaten the burgoo that is thawing now I’ll get out some potato soup.  Hints for everyone out there — you never plan on having accidents like this, but sometimes they happen, so always keep easy to reach, easy to handle food and dishes close for “that” dreaded some day.  Thought I was prepared for any kind of natural disaster, and in a way I guess I am, but sure wasn’t prepared for this kind.  When recovered, my microwave will be moved down one shelf so I can reach it from the chair if necessary.  Paper plates, bowls and plastic cutlery will be placed where they can be reached easily from the chair, and finger foods will be kept in abundance where they can be within reach.  And plastic cups will also be accessible, even though ice cubes will be a challenge.  Water is okay when not so cold though if you are thirsty enough.

How Can It Be Friday Already?

doncharisma-org-angies-place1 Since nothing seems to be working well these days, and I love this logo created for me by Don Charisma, I’m sticking it in here first thing.  My connection with Facebook seems to be broken, and even though I keep trying to refresh it I’m not having a lot of luck there, but hopefully persistence will pay off.  Don has also awarded me my second Versatile Blogger award, and tomorrow’s blog will be the one fulfilling the all the instructions for that one.  Big gulp there, and my extreme gratitude to Don for the award.blogger awardA bit different from the first one versatile-blogger-award and I still have to learn how to embed them on my site permanently, but not being quite geeky enough I may have to wait until a brother, nephew or grandson visits to show me how.

In last night’s blog I tried unsuccessfully to put in a photo of the yarn I got for the contrasting colors in my afghan.  Since I seem to be on a roll here, I’ll try again, first with the original yarn, and then the contrasting colors.  Fingers crossed here, and a few toes also. 100_2528 Original, 100_2541 and contrasting colors.  The green didn’t show up very well, and the variegated in that bag is for a pair of socks I am determined to learn to knit.

When Gina was young she wanted to learn to knit, so I gave her a couple of lessons before she lost interest.  Then the war broke out in Afghanistan and the little stinker started knitting socks, mufflers, and hats for the soldiers.  Not only that, but she also taught my granddaughter Anika to knit also.  I have never made a pair of socks in my life, but if they can do it, then I have to learn.  At least the one thing she never took up was playing the guitar.  She took about three lessons from me, complained about her sore fingers, and never touched it again.   I tried to tell her she had to build up some callosuses on her left fingers, but that idea almost brought on screaming fits from a teenager.  Imagine how horrible it would be to have callouses on your fingers when you are rubbing them down a boyfriend’s back.  Horrible!  (She usually told me a lot of things Mom’s just would rather not hear from their teenage daughters back then.)  Yet, it was better to know than to hear about an ugly surprise later.  Not that she ever shared any surprises like that with me, so she really did “save” herself for her wedding night.  Or at least was smart enough to avoid pregnancy.

Now how did I get from here to there?  Don’t ask me, because I never remember.  Or, to use my favorite Rayisn, I don’t remember if I forgot that or not.  My baby bro comes up with some good ones, mostly against me, since I usually make very innocent statements without stopping to think about what I’m saying and how he can twist them.  He does have a very twisted mind at times.

I have my dehydrator going again.  Collard greens this time.  I could have frozen them, but don’t have a lot of freezer space, so dehydrated food doesn’t take up much space.  I have a lot of other stuff that will be dehydrated before I put it all away for the winter.  I’ve decided to get another pumpkin, season and roast it, puree it, and make a pumpkin rollup for snacking.  And still have some apples and sweet potatoes to take care of from my Tuesday’s delivery.  While I’ll be glad when the deliveries begin again in spring, I think I’m glad to have some time off for a few months to catch up on other projects.  Like finishing my afghan, making the socks and hoping they actually look like socks, making Christmas cards, decorating the pine cones for ornaments, and probably a lot of other projects I just can’ remember right now.

I’m Baaack, I Think

This has been the longest week of my life.  My computer died, and it took a week to get it revived.  I couldn’t decide whether to look for a gun to shoot it, throw it out the window, or try to have it fixed.  Finally realized it would be cheapest to have it fixed, so today, or I guess now it would be yesterday, I got back a nicely patched up computer.  I had over 350 emails backed up waiting for me to go thru, and that took a while to do.

So, now I have a week of new photos, some I can remember taking, some I’m just not sure about.  So let’s get started. 100_2528 First on my list of things to keep me busy was getting this pretty yarn to make an afghan.  I had a pattern in mind when I got it, but couldn’t remember it after I came home.  So, I’m just crocheting a plain old double crochet afghan that will be warm, is pretty, but needs a solid color added to it for some contrast.  BUT, since it will just be to keep the chills away this winter, I can live with it the way it is, so that’s okay.  I love the colors and they look pretty when they are worked up.  A contrast would be prettier, but….

100_2529 I got my pumpkins and some bananas, to keep me from going bananas while I was out shopping for the yarn.  The bananas were not good travelers on the bus coming home, but they went down well with peanut butter.  At some point, maybe tomorrow, I’ll make pumpkin soup.  Having some swallowing issues right now, so I’m living on bananas with peanut butter, and purreed soup.  Noodles are easy, and spaghetti works.  More about that in a few.

100_2530 A nice loaf of bread and some tomatoes, which I had hoped to turn into sandwiches.  The tomatoes were used for another project, and the bread is now panko crumbs.

100_2531 Things were getting a bit boring there for a while.  But these are my favorite slipper socks.  And I’m doing in-home physical and occupational therapy now, so I had my feet out doing some of the exercises, and just decided, why not?

100_2532 The tomatoes are topping a chicken, broccoli, and potato, with cheese casserole that I hoped I could swallow.  It never hurts to dream, ya know.  I did manage to choke down one serving.  The neighbors enjoyed the rest of it.  At least I hope they enjoyed it.

100_2533 Not sure what this is, but I think it’s my sourdough starter, getting started again.  Which reminds me that I’ve neglected it again, so it could have died again by now.  I guess I should feed it when I get off the computer this morning.  I’ve been up all night again, but only because I’m having fun with the computer instead of fighting with it for a change.

100_2534 I decided to make some fried spaghetti, using Don Charisma’s method.  I love it!  The flavor cooks into the pasta instead of sitting on top of it and then sliding off into my lap when I take a forkful.  Don used a different type of pasta, but since I have mucho boxes of spaghetti, not to mention all the other types of pasta a friend has given me, I could make a different type every night and never run out.  I did forget to grate the parm on it though.  Can’t think of everything now, can I?

100_2535This is the train wreck you get when you turn your back on the pan while the sauce is bubbling away.  I think there is some on the kitchen ceiling too, but it will just have to stay there.  No way I’m climbing a ladder to clean the ceiling when I can barely walk or even stand these days.  I can do a great pratfall though.  Too bad I can’t take a photo while falling down.  That would be something to see.

100_2536 I kept wondering what this mess was.  Now I realize it’s a mish-mash of sweet potatoes, pears, cranberries and apples with brown sugar, maple syrup, and cinnamon that I put in the crock pot one night.  I still have a scar on my right thumb from the cut I got when trying to dislodge a slice of apple from the corer/slicer.  After that I decided my chef’s knife was less dangerous to my hands.  The results of this blend were dehydrated and made into a fruit leather, which I didn’t take a photo of, because my poor itty bitty thumb hurt.

100_2537 Yum.  Butterscotch fudge.  Still enjoying this.  It only takes two ingredients, so I can keep any flavor of fudge I want at the time on hand to keep my strength up during my swallowing problem times.  With this, you take one can of sweetened condensed milk and 18 ounces of whatever flavor chips you have a hankering for at the moment.  I’ve made two batches of chocolate, this double batch of butterscotch, and the next one will be peanut butter.  Just nuke them for 30 second intervals, and stir in between, until the chips are melted, then pour into a buttered dish.  Let it cool, then cut into pieces.  I didn’t let all of the chips melt completely, but it still tastes really good.

Whacky Wednesday

Such a fun day today.  I had a doctor’s appointment, still having problems with getting the new power chair.  So, since I spent most of the night fighting with my computer, I didn’t get any sleep.  Maybe a few winks here and there, but not much.  And to make things even more fun, it was just plain cold this morning.  Getting out from under the nice, warm blankies, into the cold room is not my idea of a good way to start a day.  But then again, I can’t sleep in a hot room, so I have to keep the heat off at night.  See the problem?  Then you turn off the nice hot water in the shower and have to eventually open the curtain and crawl out, again into a cold room, and that just adds insult to injury.

Well, to cut to the chase, I got up early, braved the cold apartment, got dressed and ready to be picked up to see the doc.  My best decisions are definitely not made before noon.  I did wear a long-sleeved shirt, but I guess I just thought it was still the middle of summer outside, because it just didn’t occur to me to grab a coat.  I do, however, keep my magic raincoat on the back of my power chair, just to make sure I don’t get rained on.  My experience here is that if I’m prepared for rain, it doesn’t happen, but if I go out unprepared, even if the sun is shining brightly, I will definitely get rained on at some point.  So, my motto is the same as the Girl Scouts…Be Prepared!  When I got downstairs and to the hall to wait for the bus, it was just flat-out COLD!!!!!  The raincoat shielded me from the wind that was cutting thru me, but still, it isn’t lined, so not much heat there.








Bountiful Tuesday

Today I got my next to last delivery from Cecil Farms for this year.  Such a bounty! 100_2515 More collard greens, which I have discovered I am in love with.  I just wish I had written down the recipe I used to make the first batch.  But I do remember starting out with a can of beer, so tonight when I start them in my crock pot, the first thing in, after the liner, will be a can of beer.  There are also apples, sweet potatoes, broccoli, cabbage and tomatoes in the group of goodies.  When supplemented with yesterday’s purchases at the grocery I’m all set for a few days of fun cooking and eating, not to mention making apple and pear butter, and then taking the waste parts of each of them and trying out a vinegar making experiment.

100_2516 Doesn’t this make a lovely bouquet?  Tomorrow I’ll start eating them.  I don’t have a ham hock, but I do have bacon and country ham, so I’ll use one of those with the collards for flavor.  I also have some ham flavored granules in the cabinet that I might add, just for the heck of it.  I know  I put an onion in the first batch, because I put onions in everything.  So I’ll be chopping an onion later tonight, and it won’t be real cooking without some garlic.  And several snips of my tomato leather.  Guess I’ll have to just make up the rest of it as I go along, and hope for the best.

100_2517 This is all the produce from today and yesterday, after I gave it a swim in the sink.  I took some huge outer leaves off the cabbage that I might try to stuff, but not really sure about that.  Might just do my unstuffed cabbage casserole again with that.  Or, I just might try making kraut.  I’m still debating that one, because of the limitations of this apartment.  It’s not much larger than my mom’s pantry, so any fumes from fermenting cabbage could do a number on everyone on the floor.  There will definitely be a chicken and broccoli casserole in the future, but for right now the broccoli will probably be frozen.  I got the green tomatoes at the grocery for frying, and the celery and bananas to eat with peanut butter.  Forgot to buy another jar of peanut butter, but it isn’t all that far to Krogers.

Have a doctor’s appointment tomorrow morning.  I must have made it in my sleep, because I hate morning appointments.  But Medicare took so long approving my new power chair that the time limit on the order for a new one ran out, so now I have to go back and see the doctor again for another mobility check, which means I will have to try to walk unassisted down a thirty foot hall.  Right now I can’t walk unassisted from my computer to my bed, which is about three feet away, so I do hope they will have someone there to break the fall so I won’t get another concussion.  They hurt, and I just don’t have time for that right now.  I have to clean out my fridge so I can find room for all the new stuff.

Irene came in to clean today, and I warned her about dropping the jar of pickled veggies a few days ago.  I had swept and mopped the floor, but she still found some glass I had missed and the floor was still sticky.  She mopped it again, but it’s still a bit sticky, so I guess it will be another episode like the one when I dropped the banana pudding.  No amount of mopping will ever get all the sticky feeling up.

anger managementBeen fighting with my computer again, so this looked like the perfect way to end this post.  Tomorrow I’ll be blogging about bread, the staff of life, and oh, so good with homemade butter.  ‘Specially while the bread is still hot and the butter melts into it and….just come back tomorrow and I’ll show you.  Unless, of course, I fall at the doc’s office and get another concussion.  Then I’ll just be nursing a major headache and saying some bad words.


Making Ketchup

100_2504 I have an actual recipe for this.  See?  It even has stains on it that show how much it has been used.  My mom has been making this all my life I think.  She got the recipe from my Aunt Lucille Goetz, so I consider it family heirloom recipe.

I made mini meatloafs and collard greens a few days ago, and am still enjoying them, but have been using store bought ketchup, since I ran out of the homemade kind.  It just doesn’t do it for me — the store-bought kind, I mean.  So…100_2502 100_2503 my crock pot is in use again tonight, making ketchup for the rest of my meatloaf.  Hopefully, by morning this will all have reduced by one half, into the wonderful ketchup I love and enjoy so much.  And hopefully I’ll be able to can a couple of extra jars this time so I won’t run out so fast.  The last time I made it I had to cut the recipe in half because I didn’t have any empty jars to can the extra in, but now I just happen to have a couple or four, so I can make the full recipe.

Well, I call it the full recipe, but actually, mom cut down the full recipe to one gallon of tomato juice, instead of the five gallons we used to use back in the day.  And since I can’t stand at the stove stirring the way I usta, I now stick it in the crock pot, so I don’t have to stir it at all, unless I want to.  But since I make it at night now, I usually sleep thru it, and if I’m lucky I can smell it when I wake up in the morning.  Life without a sense of smell kinda sucks at times, but I can live with it.  We all have to live with some kind of stuff, so I guess we all learn to adapt.  No matter what the problem, it could be a lot worse.

The ketchup reminded me of a Sunday dinner when I was a kid, and mom had fixed roast with all the trimmings.  Something she made required ketchup, but I don’t remember what it was.  Maybe she made meatloaf instead of the roast.  Anyway, we had mashed potatoes with it, and my uncle was visiting for dinner.  Since it was the homemade ketchup, mom had to find something to put it in instead of plopping the jar on the table, so she found a gravy boat that we seldom used.  My uncle, thinking it was gravy, poured a huge amount over his mashed potatoes, before any of us could warn him that it was ketchup.  Mom tried to talk him in to letting her get him another plate, but he insisted it was okay, he liked the ketchup.  He then ate the entire helping of ketchup covered mashed potatoes, and told mom they were delicious.  I have kinda wondered since then…..

Autumn love Since it’s Autumn, I just wanted to share this lovely photo of a local market where they have fall produce on display.  I’m still hoping to get some pumpkins for all of the pumpkin recipes I’ve been downloading lately.  Pumpkin is one of my favorite flavors, especially this time of year.  I could eat my weight in pumpkin pie, but then I would have to just keep on eating as my weight kept increasing until I eventually just blew up.  I guess it would be correct to say, I love pumpkin pie.  And of course, my mom has the best recipe for that also.  Since all of her recipes are handed down thru family members, I guess it would be safe to say that when I cook anything according to a recipe, I’m carrying on a Blandford or Goetz tradition.  And even when I tweak one of the recipes because I don’t have all the ingredients called for, it’s still the same tradition.

It would be nice if I could say my daughter is carrying on that tradition, but she is a vegetarian, so out go all the meats, chicken and fish.  She does eat cheese, so our mac and cheese is still almost safe, except for some of her additions.  Gritty chickpeas, which I am not a fan of, tofu — ditto.  She once told me I should become vegetarian, and I told her when she gets her dad to start eating tofu I would become vegan. She admitted defeat instantly, because we both know he will be a meat and potatoes man the rest of his life.  I can go with veggies and meatless meals, and do quite often, but I could never completely give up meat.  How can anyone from Daviess County live without burgoo?  She grew up eating burgoo.  Where did I go wrong?  Unfortunately, I know what happened.  We let her go to UK to college.  When she left home she decided to stop eating meat.  So, Mamas, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Vegetarians.  Willie almost had it right.
