More Blandford Train Wrecks

Thanksgiving dinner 2002 Thanksgiving at Mom’s house a few years ago.  L to R:  Ray, Tony, Angie, Marie, Hayman, Mom, Marcia, Mark Goetz.  And isn’t that a great looking table!

Mary Blandford Goetz recalls:  I do remember my maternal grandmother, who died in 1933, and the only thing I remember about my maternal grandfather was that when I was only 1 year old I was standing too close to an open grate and my dress caught on fire.  Grandpa was sitting close by and he grabbed me and put out the blaze.  I was not burned, thanks to him.  I just remember that he had a mustache and a long beard.  He died in May of that year, 1921.  I never knew my paternal grandparents.  My grandmother died in 1888 and my grandfather remarried and moved to Mayfield.  We don’t know when he died, but I know it was long before I was born.  I know he was a farmer, and his father before him also farmed.  In fact, one of Papa’s uncles, Aquila Blandford, donated the land that Mount St.. Joseph is build on to the Ursuline Sisters.  Papa’s dad, J.R.II, donated land for the Catholic Cemetery in Mayfield, KY.

I can remember mom telling me about Uncle Aquila donating that land to the Mount most of my life.  I guess that’s why most of my life has been tied up with the Mount’s history.

armyleovirdjohn Leo, Vird, John R.IV.

Mary Blandford Goetz:  John R., Vird and Leo were the only boys to be drafted into the Army in the early ’40’s.  Both John and Vird were cooks.  Leo was in the infantry.  All three served in Europe during the entire siege.  John had cooked at home before going into the army, but I guess Vird learned while there.

Marie Blandford Ward recalls:  We went to Mass on Sundays in shifts — too many for one car load.  While the first shift of boys were at church someone from the second shift would sew their pants legs together.  Leo had Sister Edward for a teacher.  She lived with Sister Eulalia (our aunt) and was like family.  She was always teasing Leo about his curly hair.  One time he wrapped up a real pig tail and gave it to her.  One summer afternoon we wanted to make either ice cream or fudge.  The boys were working on the farm, so Mary and Eleanor said they would milk the cow.  They started out with Mary carrying the bucket and Eleanor carrying a stick, so there was no way a cow was going to let them come near. (Mary has said they chased the cow all around the pasture without any luck and that night it wouldn’t even give any milk!)

Another story I heard mom talk about quite often while I was growing up.  To this day she is afraid of being around cows, so I’ve often wondered if they chased the cow or the cow chased them.

Mary Blandford Goetz recalls:  As for Marie, the only thing I can think of that wouldn’t embarrass her too much is that she was so short she could easily run right under the dining room table and be out of sight in a flash.  We used to call her “Wee Wee” instead of Marie.  Since she was so small, the boys often carried her to and from the bus.   It was about a two mile walk to the bus stop, which was long for her.  And the boys found it easier to carry her than to walk slow at her pace.

Gina as freshmanRegina Wink Swinford:   Uncle Vird told Aunt Marie who told me that when Uncle John was growing up there was a particular rooster who had it in for him.  I asked his daughter, Mary, about it.  She asked Uncle John.  He said he remembered the rooster, but it was mean to all of them.  One day he got it back though.  When the rooster attacked Uncle John once while he was on his way out to the barn, John took the pail he had and whacked the rooster clear down the driveway.  That was the last time the rooster bothered any of them.

Oh, the joys of growing up in the country.  I loved it myself, and I’m pretty sure my kids did also.  And even though she calls herself Regina now, she’ll always be Gina to me.  See you tomorrow.

Picnic Day at Mount St. Joseph

Today is the day that almost didn’t happen.  The annual picnic at Mount St. Joseph.  Last Saturday, one week before work for today’s picnic got underway, a violent storm passed thru that area, and the destruction was fierce. picnic area MSJ picnic area again BBQ pit MSJ 2013 These are some photos of the picnic area taken after the storm.  Complete devastation.  But the community around the area got together, and today it happened.  Didn’t get to go myself because of balance problems, but several members of family were there.  The three photos above were taken by one of the sisters in residence at the Mount, and posted on Facebook.  Today my sis, Sylvie, the Bristle Thistle, took some pictures of the cooking meat and the burgoo pots, mostly emptied by then.

Burgoo Pot 1 Two of the pots, still simmering. Burgoo pots 2 A partial row of pots.  Before the crowds got to them.  Little bro, Ray told us later they sold out early.  Not sure how many pots they have altogether, but each one holds 50 gallons of burgoo.  Big bro, Tony brought me three gallons, two gallons for mom, two for himself.  Not sure who the other ten were for, but he got seventeen gallons total.

Fortunately for Sylvie and Erin, Ray’s house just above picnic area.  Since they live in Colorado they don’t know how to breathe real air that has humidity in it.  Spent most of their time at Ray’s house.  Steve also spent most time at Rays house.  Injured his foot or ankle last night walking down the hill.  Headed back to Tulsa tomorrow and decided to wait til gets home to see doctor.  Borrowed Ray’s crutches for now.finally got head togetherEveryone in family falling apart except for mom.  She’s healthy as horse, just no cartilage in knees.  Rest of us breaking bones, back problems, vision problems, everything falling apart.  So sad.  She’ll outlive us all.

100_2442 This is youngest grandson, Andrew, slowly dehydrating to death on Saturday.  Said he was seeing the light.  Only way to save life was go to hotel and get in swimming pool.  Offered to stick him in shower, but that wouldn’t work.  Had to be swimming pool.  Kid should have fins instead of feet.  Cousin Noah spent night at hotel with him, so another reason he wanted to get there.  Kept telling him Noah was at birthday party of friend and couldn’t get there yet, but still dehydrating.  Just had to be in pool to be rehydrated.

100_2443 Andrew and Noah this morning, as they were getting ready to leave for home.  Gave Anika some scarves, taught her how to make them, so Andrew wanted one, then Noah wanted one too.  Think Noah’s will go to his mom, but Andrew is having too much fun with his.  Kid comes up with too many creative ways to make head-gear.  Just hope he doesn’t wear it to school.  Noah’s our Grand Champion cattle winner.  Has more sense than most grownups in this family.

So, back to picnic.  Or after picnic was over.  Mom’s house was crowded with visitors.  Mom and I both graduated from Mount high school.  She loved it.  Me?  Not so much.  Love the place, just not the school.  Not a school any more, convention center.  Can visit again without getting those old willies it used to give me.  Sylvie and Erin were at Mom’s when Tony brought burgoo to me and took me back over there.  Was just waking up from nap, after Anika and I spent night having fun together.  Had sourdough waffles for breakfast.  Broke off bites and just dipped in peach syrup made during summer.  No need to sit down or dirty dishes that way.  More fun than acting like grownups too.

Okay, where was I.  At Mom’s.  Don came in first.  Had to work this morning, so didn’t expect to see him.  Then cousin Mark and Sandy, after that friend of Sylvie’s who had worked at picnic.  Mark and Sandy left, Steve called asked about dinner plans, Sylvie’s friend left, Tony left, Steve and Jay got back, Don, Erin and Jay went out for barbecue for them, fish for me.  Jay won cake at picnic, so had some for dessert, then Don and I said goodbye and he brought me home so he could get home before too late.  Day’s over, ah’m tar’d, and ready to put burgoo away and sleeeeeeeep.

Dinner At Mom’s

The family is arriving for the Mount St. Joseph picnic.  Steve and Jay got her yesterday, and while Jay was cooking dinner, Steve picked me up tonight.  After first making trip to Sam’s.  Dropped me off at mom’s house, picked up new grocery list from Jay and left for Kroger.  Sylvie and Erin were there when we got there.  Think Tony gets there tomorrow.  Ray there earlier, but had work to do back at Mount.  They are still cleaning picnic area up from storm, but mostly all ready, and things will go on as planned.

100_2432 Jay in background, Steve’s friend Tony from high school in front.  Both great chefs.  Love to watch men doing the kitchen work.  Especially when they can really cook.

100_2434 Mom supervising the progress.  Hates to see other people take over her kitchen, but will let Jay, Tony, and Elaine, who can’t make it home cook.  Erin also allowed.  Not me.  Too messy.  She doesn’t like train wrecked kitchens.  Or any other rooms either.  So my job is to sit and be beautiful 🙂

a_Bristle_Thistle_Flower Since Syl and Erin don’t like having pictures taken the bristle thistle is for both of them.  Just love that flower.  Bristle thistle, bristle thistle, bristle thistle.  Some day will be able to say three times in a row and not get tongue-tied.  Can’t even type it three times in row right now.  Keep practicing though, so some day, maybe.

100_2435 Dinner, buffet style.  Really good.  Had to take dumpling pan back.  That’s it on left.  Full of salad.  Dessert was Dove chocolates from Sylvie, who is Dove Chocolatier, and can’t remember what they’re called from Steve.  Cream puffs?  Little cream filled bites of goodness.  Whatever, ate too much.  Going to have to just roll from place to place rest of night.

Gina, Anika and Andrew coming tomorrow.  Will be having lunch out, since rest are grilling steak.  Don’t like steak.  Gina and Anika vegetarians.  Andrew eats anything that doesn’t move out of way fast enough.  He’s outnumbered.  Anika spending night with me.  Can’t wait. Cowgirl Anika Such a sweet, funny girl.  Plays clarinet in high school marching band.  Noah spending night with Andrew, Anika doesn’t want to be cooped up with “those boys”.  Has three brothers.  Don’t blame her.  So outnumbered at home already.

Probably time to get rest.  Long, busy day tomorrow and Sunday.  And burgoo on Sunday.  YUMMY.
